Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas, ‘Showgirls’ follows a mysterious girl, Nomi Malone, who arrives in Las Vegas hoping to become a dancer. She starts at a strip club before making her way to a more upscale but equally objectifying show. Along the way, she encounters a myriad of miserable men and demonstrates sisterhood in the midst of prevailing sexism.
The film won 7 Razzie Awards in 1995: Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Actress, Worst New Star (Elizabeth Berkley), Worst Screen Couple, Worst Original Song, and Worst Director. Verhoeven is among the few winners who actually showed up to accept the award.
Although it was a box office success, especially in video rental stores, critics from major media outlets mercilessly panned it. Years later, however, more and more people considered it a masterpiece, and it became one of the most iconic cult films.
