Indecent Theologies 2: Art and Queer Spirituality

In this lecture-workshop, we will explore images from different historical periods where queer religious iconographies and dissidences in performative norms intersect in an anachronistic manner. These differences will present a journey from the 21st century to the Middle Ages, encompassing images found in art galleries to those appearing in the margins, sometimes within sacred books. What do these images share? Are they inherently dissident or do we interpret them as such? How can we understand the relationship between “queer,” understood in its etymological sense of rare, strange, and suspicious, and that which we have internalized as sacred, simultaneously excluding it from the definition?

Registered participants will receive an image and a question in advance to prepare for their participation on the day of the workshop.

David Carrillo-Rangel is a predoctoral researcher at the University of Bergen. With a background in Humanities and Audiovisual Communication from Pompeu Fabra University and a Master’s in Medieval Cultures from the University of Barcelona, his research is grounded in an ongoing dialogue between the past and the present, aiming to reorient historical discourses from a perspective of queer studies. Part of his work involves creating spaces of convergence between academic research, activism, and pedagogy.
